Making CV

Writing a CV is a daunting task so I thought I'd share some of my thoughts with regards to the options.

When I was writing my CV I did some research and realised I had four options :-

1) Write it myself - this is hard work and you need a lots of different skills
2) Get a CV writer to do it- do you trust them. I had one made and it was crap.
3) Buy a template and fill it in- a good option but you need some techy and wordy skills.
4) Use an online CV generator to do the hard work - the techy skills aren't needed - you can focus on the words !!!

Write down with a piece of paper. Look at the job that you are applying. Consider how your skills, education, and experience compare with the skills that the job requires. How much information do you have about the job description.

CV must sell you to a prospective employer and compete against other applicants who are also trying to sell themselves. So, challenge in CV writing is to be more appealing and attractive than the rest.

Always write a new CV for each job, specifically designing them to answer and highlight the relevant information about yourself with regards to the job requirements; never give a standard formal CV to one and all.

CV is the way to promote yourself. Therefore, it should be attractive, so while making a CV following things are to remember.
Pick a professional template
Target your industry when writing your resume
Have no spelling or grammatical mistakes
Keep your resume up-to-date.

Hi Jisma

You are right in that many people find CV writing daunting.

You mention most of most common options (you can probably add CV examples to these).

Just as with anything there are good and bad, and exactly the same happens when it comes to CVs.

There are good and bad writers, and also some people are more creative and better at selling themselves than others. Consequently, some people do a better job at writing their own CV than others. Templates also vary considerably, as do online CV builders. Similarly, CV examples vary greatly in quality. Some are very generic and are no use to anyone, whereas others are specifically targeted and well written.

As for CV writing companies, these vary greatly in terms of quality. Some are little more than CV writing factories that write CVs as quickly as possible, however at the other end of the scale there are some outstanding (and very meticulous) CV writing companies, with very talented writers, lots of experience, and an excellent track record helping people improve their job prospects.

At the end of the day it's up to each individual what is best for them, but job seekers should be aware that there will be good as well as bad in whichever option they may choose.
